Wanaka lies in the Southern Lakes area of New Zealand in the Southwest of the South Island. It is situated at the gateway to the world heritage listed Mt Aspiring National Park. It is the resort town for the world famous ski areas of Treble Cone and Cardrona.
Cardrona is 34 km from Wanaka and is renowned for its dry snow and wide slopes. It has the best on-mountain children's facilities in New Zealand for ages 3 months - 12 years. Magic carpets have been installed on many of the learners slopes. Cardrona has been voted New Zealand's snowboard riders choice for the last three years. It has varied terrain over three large basins and is the ideal resort to learn to ski or snowboard. Its location means that it has less than 5 closed days per season.
Treble Cone offers both world famous views and deep powder spread over three large basins. It is a 35 minute drive from Wanaka. The resort covers 500 ha and 600m vertical and has some of the longest groomed runs in New Zealand. Treble Cone has both great learners slopes and some areas to challenge even the best skiers and boarders. It is famous for its 6-seater high speed chair lift, small queues, amazing views, varied terrain and powder. It has featured in articles on "Top Ski Resorts of the World", is a premier race training facility for overseas ski teams and won the award for the "best free ride destination" by Boardtheworld.com in 2001.
